Chick feeding TIPS

  • To stimulate day-old chicks to feed, put paper on floor with feed

  • Place 1 scratch tray per 100 chicks

  • Place 1‐2 Feeders per 100 chicks

  • Check crops of chicks 24 hours after placement – 90% should be full

  • 7-day body weight should be at least 4.25 times day-old weight

  • 14-day body weight should be 9 times day-old weight

  • Food consumption rate (FCR) should not be more than 1.7 at 35 days

  • Body weight should be at least 1.8 at 35 days

  • Always store feed in a dry room; clean free of rodents

  • Feed should always be ad lib - never run out of feed

Water

  • Place 3 x 3ℓ or 4ℓ WATER FOUNTS (228mm dia) per 100 chicks

  • Place 1 x ECONO DRINKER (357mm) per 100 chicks

  • Give vitamins on day 1 to 7

  • Drinkers should be optimum full when chicks arrive

  • Adjust drinkers regularly until thumbnail (shoulder) height when older

  • Chickens drink twice the amount feed eaten

  • Water should always be available and clean – remove shavings in drinkers

  • Water intake suppressed when water temperature is too hot or cold – ideal 10 ‐14 degrees centigrade

  • Drinkers should not be too far from feeders

REASONS FOR POOR GROWTH

  • Disease

  • Stress caused by:
Brooding temperatures: floor temperatures too hot or cold
    Drafts
    Inadequate ventilation
High ammonia levels in the house

  • Floor space is insufficient

  • Accessibility to feed and/or water

  • Chick quality

  • Feed quality

feed type required for Chick Stages

  • Starter – never under feed. This stage is important for skeletal growth; to ensure strong legs and frame for body

  • Grower – important for growth of organs and muscles

  • Finisher – important for growth of feathers and pigmentation

recommended FEED intake

0-18 days - 1000gram per chick

19-35 days - 1200gram per chick

36-42 days - 1400gram per chick
